Jason Phu featured in the Sydney Morning Herald
Jason Phu was interviewed by Kerrie O’Brien from the Sydney Morning Herald about his recent entries into the Wynne, Sulman and Archibald prizes this year.
Curator of the 2023 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes Anne Ryan says only a few artists have been finalists across all three. Ryan says Phu often injects a slightly anarchic sense of humour into his work, citing his entry in the Wynne this year, which includes a pile of dead rats. “It’s a great story, a little bit autobiographical, working in a [commercial] kitchen with rats running amok. He kind of has this deadpan way of telling these stories, he doesn’t necessarily explain pictures in a way audiences would find immediately accessible, it’s slightly elusive and slightly anarchic, but obviously it’s appealing to a lot of people because he’s getting his work shown and people are enjoying it.”
